Bulging leg veins can affect how your legs look and feel. Learn why varicose veins develop, which symptoms to watch for, and how treatment can help.

What causes varicose veins?

When one-way valves weaken, blood can collect in a vein instead of moving efficiently toward the heart. The vein may become enlarged and twisted.

What might you notice?

Raised, rope-like veins differ from the fine lines of spider veins.

  • Aching, heaviness, or swelling
  • Burning, itching, or cramping
  • Discomfort after prolonged standing
  • Skin changes near the veins

Everyday care

Movement breaks, leg elevation, and clinician-recommended compression can help manage symptoms. They do not remove every existing vein.

Treatment options

Sclerotherapy closes selected veins with an injection. Radiofrequency ablation uses heat inside the vein. Other minimally invasive options may suit different vein patterns. Your specialist can explain the choices after examining your legs and blood flow.

Frequently asked questions

Are varicose veins always cosmetic?

No. Pain, swelling, skin changes, or wounds deserve medical attention.
