Sclerotherapy Q & A

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a nonsurgical treatment in which Dr. Golshan injects a liquid or foam medication into abnormal blood vessels, causing them to shrink or close. The procedure reroutes blood flow to healthy blood vessels, and the immune system eventually eliminates the damaged veins from the body.

Sclerotherapy uses chemicals that cause “sclerosing,” or hardening of venous tissue. The most common sclerosing agents are saline solutions and polidocanol. These chemicals are carefully formulated into safe, FDA-approved medications that Dr. Golshan injects into your veins using an extremely fine needle. Sclerotherapy is safe and effective for treating cosmetic and medical vein conditions.

Which conditions can sclerotherapy address?

Dr. Golshan at Beach Wellness MD specializes in nonsurgical vein treatments, including sclerotherapy. He performs the procedure to address several conditions, including:

  • Spider veins
  • Varicose veins
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Ankle discoloration (stasis dermatitis)

Dr. Golshan also combines sclerotherapy with additional vein treatments, including Varithena®, an FDA-approved foam medication that causes damaged veins to collapse.

What are the benefits of sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that’s as effective as vein surgery; however, there are fewer risks associated with sclerotherapy, and it has a much shorter recovery period than traditional surgery. Sclerotherapy is also less painful and has a lower chance of causing nerve damage than laser or radiofrequency vein treatments.

Additional benefits of sclerotherapy include:

  • Short treatments (10-15 minutes)
  • No anesthesia
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Little to no downtime
  • No scarring

An improvement in the appearance of visible veins can be seen as early as one week following sclerotherapy. Full results are typically seen around one month after your procedure. Sometimes, multiple treatments are necessary for optimal results.

What should I expect during my sclerotherapy procedure?

During your sclerotherapy treatment, you recline comfortably while Dr. Golshan applies a topical numbing spray to the skin over the target area. He then carefully performs several injections.

You may feel a slight pinching, but this isn’t usually painful. After your injections are complete, Dr. Golshan massages the injection site to prevent blood from re-entering the treated veins.

In most cases, patients can resume daily activities right after their sclerotherapy treatment. Dr. Golshan may recommend that you avoid strenuous physical activity and wear a compression garment for up to a week after your sclerotherapy procedure.
