ALL ABOUT OUR VARICOSE VEIN & VASCULAR TREATMENTS

GENERAL INFO

1) WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VARICOSE VEINS AND SPIDER VEINS?

Varicose veins are blue in color and larger in size (typically 3mm or more). Spider veins are purple or reddish in color and smaller in size (typically 1mm or less).

2) WHAT CAUSES VARICOSE VEINS?

There are valves (think of them as one-way trap doors) in your veins that keep the blood flowing up to the heart. When these valves stop working properly, the blood travels down the diseased veins. The blood then pools and dilates the side branches of the veins. As a result, varicose veins are formed.

3) WHAT CAUSES SPIDER VEINS?

Multiple conditions and factors can cause spider veins. These include: abnormal veins and poorly functioning valves, trauma, sun exposure, and hormones. If you have spider veins you may or may not have underlying venous disease.

4) WHAT IS A VASCULAR & INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGIST? WHY SHOULD I SEE ONE FOR MY COSMETIC VEIN TREATMENTS RATHER THAN A DERMATOLOGIST OR PLASTIC SURGEON?

Vascular & Interventional Radiologists are subspecialty trained physicians that have completed a residency in radiology and a fellowship in interventional radiology. They specialize in using imaging technologies like ultrasound to diagnose and treat vascular conditions that arise inside the body, without needing to cut the body open. These highly trained vascular specialists are experts in performing minimally-invasive surgery without the use of scalpels.

Varicose veins and spider veins can have cosmetic symptoms that are skin-deep, but the medical source of the problem always lies deeper inside the body. As a vascular specialist, Dr. Golshan will ensure you receive comprehensive treatment to treat your veins inside and out. While other types of doctors such as dermatologists and plastic surgeons may be able to address the surface symptoms of your vein condition, they do not specialize in treating the source.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR VEIN TREATMENT

1) ARE YOUR VEIN TREATMENTS AS EFFECTIVE AS VEIN SURGERY?

Yes! Our minimally invasive vein procedures are just as effective as vein surgery, with the added benefits of having faster recovery times, less discomfort, no scars, and lower complication rates. While traditional surgery and other varicose vein treatments such as RFA and laser are effective, they come with several downsides. Not only are these procedures quite painful, but they can also cause nerve damage.

2) WILL MY VEIN TREATMENT HURT?

To minimize any potential discomfort, we use a cooling numbing spray prior to your varicose vein or spider vein sclerotherapy procedure. The treatment itself involves injection of medication with a very small needle. The degree of discomfort experienced can range from no pain to moderate discomfort for a few seconds. While the experience varies from patient to patient, the majority of our patients report feeling either no pain or only brief, mild discomfort during the procedure. Many patients compare the vein injection to the experience of receiving an injection of Botox or cosmetic fillers.

3) WILL INSURANCE COVER MY TREATMENT? WHAT INSURANCE PLANS DO YOU ACCEPT?

Insurance often covers the initial consult and ultrasound evaluation. The cost of vein treatment is also often covered if you have medical symptoms such as pain, swelling, itching etc. Please consult with your insurance provider if you have any questions regarding your individual coverage. Beach Wellness MD accepts Medicare, Blue Shield, Blue Cross, Cigna, Aetna, and many PPOs. If you have questions about the type of insurance we accept, please call our office at 310-974-8767.

4) HOW LONG WILL MY PROCEDURE TAKE?

The actual vein procedure takes just 10 to 15 minutes. Including the procedure, your office visit will take approximately 30 minutes.

5) CAN I EAT BEFORE MY PROCEDURE?

Yes, you may eat and drink prior to your procedure.

6) DO I NEED TO STOP TAKING MY MEDICATIONS PRIOR TO MY PROCEDURE?

Generally you will not need to stop taking your medications prior to having a vein procedure. Please consult with Dr. Golshan regarding any medical conditions you have along with any medications you are currently taking.

7) WILL I NEED TO WEAR COMPRESSION STOCKINGS? FOR HOW LONG?

To ensure optimal success of your treatment, all vein procedures performed on the legs will require that you wear either an elastic bandage or a compression stocking after treatment. The compression is necessary to keep the medication concentrated in your veins for maximum effectiveness. The duration of compression required ranges from 2 to 5 days depending on the procedure. After 24 hours post-procedure, you may remove your compression and take a shower.

8) HOW MANY VEIN TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

The number of treatments needed can vary from one treatment to several depending on the number of veins being treated and the degree and severity of your venous condition.
