Why do varicose and spider veins appear?

Your veins contain a one-way valve that prevents blood from flowing backward (away from your heart). If this valve, or parts of the vein around the valve, become too weak or damaged, a bulge can form. The bulge may start to branch out, resulting in spider or varicose veins.
The main difference is the depth at which the two types of veins lie. Spider veins tend to be more superficial, or closer to the surface of your skin, while varicose veins tend to lie deeper underneath your skin.
Why winter is a great time to start vein treatment
As the saying goes, “summer bodies are made in the winter.” This adage usually refers to body composition changes — that is, losing body fat and gaining muscle — but it rings true for your skin appearance, too.

- In the winter, your skin is less susceptible to sun damage. It’s always best to minimize sun exposure before and after vein treatments.
- During the winter, most people reduce their physical activity. You may need to take some time off from exercise after vein treatment, so treatment may fit more naturally into your winter routine than your summer schedule.
- You may need to wear compression stockings after your vein treatment, which can really cramp your summer style. In winter, they’ll likely be hidden under pants or leggings.
